The project aims to firstly improve our understanding of the state of our urban waterways, and then to improve the holistic values of these systems, through partnering with Tangata Whenua and the community and implementing improvement projects.
Our methodology will be unique because it leverages off proven Western science waterway assessment methods – and integrates matauranga Maori equitably.
Outcomes that will be achieved:
The project will apply to specific surface freshwater watercourses within the Tairāwhiti urban area and would comprise the following:
Wainui, Matokitoki, Kopuawhakapata, Mangapapa, Owen, Esplanade, Reynolds, Te Hapara, and Waiteatea waterways.
These are all waterways within the Gisborne City urban area.
