Purpose:
Certification:
This certifies that the assessor has successfully completed the requirements of the Ngāti Te Whiti Mauri Compass Level 2 Assessor Training Programme and is verified as a qualified assessor to carry out cultural and environmental monitoring using the Mauri Compass on behalf of Ngāti Te Whiti in partnership with Port Taranaki Limited.
This accreditation confirms the assessor’s capability to:
Level: 2 (Advanced Application)
Pre-requisite: Completion of Level 1 Mauri Compass (Intro)
Day 1 – Whakapapa o te Moana & Marine Ecology. 11.00AM - 4.00PM
Objective: Reconnect with the ecological and cultural whakapapa of the Port area

Objective: This session is about ensuring that scores are valid and repeatable.

Programme Overview

Purpose:
- Equip experienced kaitiaki with skills to calibrate, interpret, and present Mauri Compass data for coastal monitoring of pāua, kina, kūtai, kōura, and snapper in the Port Taranaki area.
- Develop a Mauri Compass baseline assessment for the Port Taranaki area in alignment with the Ngati Te Whiti Marine Cultural Health Index
- Verify that Ngāti Te Whiti kaitiaki who complete Level 2 certification are qualified to lead cultural and environmental assessments in alignment with the MCHI and Mauri Compass

- Carry out field-based assessments at agreed sites within the Port Taranaki coastal environment
- Apply the full suite of Mauri Compass indicators with integrity, cultural grounding, and analytical consistency
- Produce assessment reports that reflect both Mātauranga-a-Ngāti Te Whiti and environmental policy requirements
- Support Ngāti Te Whiti in engagements with local authorities, technical experts, and external partners including Port Taranaki Limited

- Taonga species focus: Pāua, Kina, Kūtai, Kōura, Tamure
- Activity: Timeline of Change (Kōrero tuku iho vs. observations)

Day 2 – Metric Calibration and Field Scoring
Objective: This session is about ensuring that scores are valid and repeatable.
- Calibration of the 4 new indicators:
- Habitat Modification Awareness
- Species Recolonisation & Recruitment
- Cultural Access & Safety
- Kaitiaki Activation
- Small-group field calibration exercise at one monitoring site
- Group scoring + debrief discussion

Day 3 – Data Input & Dashboarding

- Introduction to the Excel/Google Sheet dashboard
- How to enter scores accurately (site names, dates, formatting)

- Troubleshooting + live dashboard walkthrough using sample data
