Kia ora.
Ko Te Aitanga a Mahaki, ko Ngati Porou, ko Ngai Tai, ko Whakatohea oku iwi.  Tenei ra te mihi nui ki a koutou.

The inspiration for the Mauri Compass came from my father, the late Bill Ruru, and his commitment for passing his matauranga Maori onto his grandsons.  I was lucky to have spent a lot of time with Dad, delivering aquaculture and customary fishing qualifications through workshops at over 300 marae.

I have a scientific background in marine and freshwater fisheries and am a Director on a number of iwi commercial fishing companies.  My other roles can be found through these links:
Kahui Maori, Sustainable Seas Science Challenge
Te Wai Maori Trust
Te Puna o Taumata Arowai (Crown Appointment)

Simone and I are the current Kaitiaki of the Mauri Compass.

He uri whakaheke ahau no te whānau Shivnan ki Aerani. I te taha o toku papa no nga rohe o Roscommon me Fermanagh.  I te taha o toku koka no nga rohe o Antrim me Cork.  I tipu ake au i Te Tairawhiti.  Tenei au e mihi atu nei, tena koutou, tena koutou, tena tatou katoa.

I have enjoyed an extensive, diverse and rewarding career in education working across the sector in teaching, academic development and managerial roles.  Five years ago, I returned to tertiary education to pursue a lifelong desire, to learn te reo Maori me ona tikanga.  This has been one of the more significant things I have done in my life and I consider myself immensely privileged to have had this opportunity.

My commitment to learning te reo Maori me ona tikanga and the nurturing of this, within our sons, remains steadfast.
